I love all Fruits and can call myself a fruit lover but in the past one month, this has become an obsession. You can literally see me searching the streets of Lagos with my eyes looking for it. In fact the other day, my husband was driving the family back from a wedding and we drove past a lady selling Soursop on the street, i shouted "Soursop, please go back." Hahaha. He reversed because I have converted him and my baby girl, Zara too. There was a day I was close to tears and saying "why can't you two let me eat this fruit in peace?" Lol.
Funny thing is, when I was a little girl, we had a Soursop tree in the backyard of my parents house. We did not eat much of it but I remember the tree was annoying as heck. It attracted huge ants and as the tree was close to the kitchen, these ants just marched straight into the kitchen. In the end, my parents had to cut the tree down, as the ants were causing havoc.
WHAT IS SOURSOP?
It is a green fruit found in the tropical parts of Nigeria, Mexico, Cuba, Caribbean, South east Asia, Democratic republic of Congo, etc. It is also known as 'Prickly Custard Apple'. It is green in colour with small thorns on the skin with the inside having a creamy colour.
The taste is divine and just so creamy. It has many seeds though and they are indigestible. So if feeding a child, you need to take care to remove the seeds and feed them the pulp. I also recently learnt that this fruit is medicinal and is claimed to contain anti-oxidants effective in treating cancer. The leaves are also medicinal and can be infused in water for consumption. It is rich in Vitamins C, B1 and B2. Like my Igbo people would call it "Shawasup" is great in smoothies and for flavouring drinks.
Do you love Soursop? Do you have any other fruits you are obsessed with?
Chinelo, you are hereby sued for making my mouth water with no means of curbing my hunger. Lol

Hahahaha.... pls presh pardon me for the assault o!Lol. coconuts are Bae too. Breaking it open was the challenge but I recently started using a mortar and pestle to break it open.
DeleteNelo you see,I used to like 'showanshop' as we call it in the East i.e Iboland but the ones I see in Lagos nowadays don't look appealing at all. Despite the fact that they don't look very green as we used to know, there is a very high demand for the fruit. This is obviously because a lot of people are aware of the high nutritional value. Soursop has also become so expensive and unaffordable to the common man, imagine a small piece selling for five hundred naira. Anyway, my best fruit is mango(cherry mango to be precise), I can eat a whole basket in a day and nothing happens. i can't wait for the season to be back. Cheers Nelo girl.....Uche Okonkwo.
ReplyDeleteyou are right about it being so expensive in Lagos. I guess its due to its high demand. You and Cherry mango, you will just have to wait for it to be back in season. xoxo
DeleteI never knew the right spelling till recently. Smh but I used to love it! My neighbours had a soursop tree back then and we used to pluck it. I've even forgotten the taste now because it's been sooo long!
